We have made a commitment to run our school the way we would like to be taught. For us, this means as close to one-on-one with the instructor as possible, not sitting around watching others sail, and learning while gaining “real world” knowledge and experiences.
2:1 STUDENT TO INSTRUCTOR RATIO
We offer an industry-leading two students to one instructor per 101 and 103 class, allowing you maximum sailing time. No sitting and watching while others sail, you will be participating each step of the way.
ASA 101 and ASA 103 are core instructional programs that can impact your long-term ASA progressive learning/skill development. For this reason we offer each course in a 3 day format (101 is also available in a 4 day format) for increased time on the water developing your sailing skills and maximizing knowledge retention.
VARIETY OF REAL CRUISING EXPERIENCES
You will be putting most of the sailing knowledge you have gained into action. Sailing into and out of inlets. Intracoastal Waterway and inlet channel marker and tidal challenges. Anchoring in tidal and wind conditions. Each course better prepares you for what to expect in the real world.
SINGLE-HANDED OR SHORT-HANDED SAILING
Our two-student limit for 101 and 103 prepares you for the challenges of sailing as a couple/pair while also teaching you to manage the sailboat solo in normal sailing conditions.
FOCUS ON OCEAN SAILING
95% of our sailing is done in the Atlantic Ocean. Typically, each day presents different conditions to challenge and prepare you for ocean sailing, and because our sailing is done on the ocean, we get a consistent sea breeze that makes it very rare that you will have no wind during your lesson.
All of our on-the-water American Sailing Association courses are live-aboard sailing programs, allowing you to avoid additional hotel costs.
MAXIMUM EDUCATION, PRACTICE & RETENTION
No short-cuts with us! We are here to teach you the life-long skills of sailing/cruising. Our course lengths are atypical from the industry standard for increased time on the water developing your sailing skills and maximizing knowledge retention. In most cases we do not believe in shortening courses or allowing you to complete 3 to 4 courses in one week so you may receive your certifications “quickly”. You have made a commitment with us and yourself to learn to sail, we are committed to you to make this happen.
Our ASA 103 program allows for optional anchoring at un-inhabited Bird Island at least one night during the course, while our ASA 104 allows a 25-30 mile each way ocean sail for an overnight stay at Southport or Bald Head Island, NC.
FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING FOR ASA101, ASA103 & ASA104
Courses can be reserved based on your schedule and our availability, including spread out over multiple weekends.
STUDENT/INSTRUCTOR PRACTICE SESSION
After you receive your ASA Certification(s) we want you to keep sailing, therefore we have setup an affordable all-day sailing rate that includes an Instructor so you may return and practice your sailing skills.
