ASA 105 teaches the intermediate sailor the required skills to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters. This is a theory course only, there is no sailing involved. The practical application of the material taught in this course is part of, and is a prerequisite to, ASA 106, Advanced Coastal Cruising.
In this course you learn the theory of navigation, including:
- Reading charts
- Using the instruments on board
- Understanding tide and current tables
- Converting courses and bearings for true, magnetic, and compass directions
- Dead reckoning
- Plotting a course
The Classroom Format is a pre-scheduled 3 day classroom course and is available in March and August. Days 1 & 2 are instructional based. The exam will be given on Day 3.
You may also elect to take this course as an At-Home Study, then take the test with us when you feel you are prepared.
